Desmond gave her hand a squeeze before letting go and
sitting back in his chair. “I admit my intentions aren’t saintly, but I assure
you I mean ya no harm.”
Sky gawked at him. “Are you always so…forward?”
He shrugged. “How else are you supposed to get what you want
if ya don’t put it out there?” He clasped his hands behind his head as he
studied her. “Do you like rainbows?”
She laughed—might have snorted a little. What a strange way
to change the subject. She couldn’t decide if he was playing some sort of game
with her or if he was naturally mysterious, charming, a little odd, and
exceptionally bold. “Um…who doesn’t?”
A soul-warming smile curved his full lips, his eyes
twinkling. “Take a walk with me. Let’s see if we can find one.”
She eyed him. “You’re a little nuts, aren’t you?”
“Maybe.” He gazed at her for long moments before continuing.
“How about a little bet? If we don’t find a rainbow, I’ll grant you a wish.
Anything ya want. If we do, you take me home with you tonight.”
It was a silly game and she couldn’t figure out why he
wanted to play it. Obviously a rainbow wasn’t going to magically appear, so
that meant he’d lose the bet. She couldn’t even remember the last time she’d
seen one. Maybe he was so confident that he assumed her wish would be a night
of naked with him. But whatever, she’d play and see where it led. “You’re on.”
